چکیده

With increasing cancer incidence in Africa, a number of Sub-Saharan African countries have started implementing radiotherapy programs based on linear accelerator (linac) technology. This work summarizes the commissioning experience commercially available medical linac installed resource-limited oncology centre Cameroon for delivery high-quality radiation treatments to patients central Africa. is country Using 2D water phantom and various ionization chambers, we measured data with 6X 18X photon beams, five electron energies ranging from 6–20 MeV. Relative measurements included percent depth doses (PDDs), beam profiles, scatter factors, wedge cone factors. Absolute calibrations were performed using American Association Physicist Medicine Task Group Report 51. Accurate checked by irradiating mailed thermoluminescent dosimeters service offered MD Anderson Cancer Center. Photon PDDs agreed within 1% average several linacs same type at depths between 5 20 cm, which are consistent used manufacturer acceptance testing. For electrons, agreement was 2 mm R50, R90, Rp, dmax. Symmetry flatness all beams 2% fields. All absolute met Center criteria 3%. presents successful implementation modernization program technology sub-region As first operational sub-region, can provide comparison other future ensure machine clinical use.

Commissioning and early experience with a new generation low-energy linear accelerator in zahedan

Introduction: Since commissioning beam data are treated as a reference and ultimately used by treatment planning systems, it is vitally important that the collected data are of the highest quality to avoid dosimetric and patient treatment errors that may subsequently lead to a poor radiation outcome. Beam data commissioning should be performed with appropriate knowledge and pr...

A New Generation of Physicians in Sub-Saharan Africa?; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

This commentary follows up on an editorial by Eyal and colleagues in which these authors discuss the implications of the emergence of non-physician clinicians (NPCs) on the health labour market for the education of medical doctors. We generally agree with those authors and we want to stress the importance of clarifying the terminology to describe these practitioners and of defining more formall...

Non-physician Clinicians – A Gain for Physicians’ Working in Sub-Saharan Africa; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

The changing demands on the health sectors in low- and middle-income countries especially sub-Saharan African countries continue to challenge efforts to address critical shortages of the health workforce. Addressing these challenges have led to the evolution of “non-physician clinicians” (NPCs), that assume some physician roles and thus mitigate the continuing shortage of doctors in these count...

Medical schools in sub-Saharan Africa.

Small numbers of graduates from few medical schools, and emigration of graduates to other countries, contribute to low physician presence in sub-Saharan Africa. The Sub-Saharan African Medical School Study examined the challenges, innovations, and emerging trends in medical education in the region. We identified 168 medical schools; of the 146 surveyed, 105 (72%) responded. Findings from the st...

Medical education in sub-Saharan Africa: a literature review.

OBJECTIVES This review synthesises research published in the traditional and 'grey' literature to promote a broader understanding of the history and current status of medical education in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS We performed an extensive review and analysis of existing literature on medical education in SSA. Relevant literature was identified through searches of five traditional med...
